If you're living with chronic abdominal pain from conditions like pancreatitis, cancer, or digestive disorders, a Celiac Plexus Block may offer the targeted relief you've been searching for. This minimally invasive procedure helps calm overactive nerve signals in the abdomen, reducing pain and improving quality of life.
At Lifespring Pain Management Center, our board-certified pain specialists perform this image-guided injection safely and precisely—so you can find lasting relief with minimal downtime.
The celiac plexus is a group of nerves located in the abdomen near the spine. These nerves send pain signals from the organs of the abdomen to the brain. When these nerves are overstimulated—often due to pancreatic cancer, chronic pancreatitis, or other gastrointestinal conditions—they can cause persistent, severe abdominal pain.
A celiac plexus block uses a local anesthetic and medication (sometimes with a neurolytic agent) to temporarily or permanently disrupt pain transmission, offering meaningful relief.
Preparation
You’ll receive IV sedation to help you relax. Your provider will clean and numb an area in your back with a local anesthetic.
Imaging & Needle Placement
Using X-ray (fluoroscopy) for real-time guidance, a thin needle is inserted near the spine to approach the celiac plexus nerves.
Contrast & Injection
A contrast dye is injected to confirm proper needle placement. Then, a combination of anesthetic and pain-relieving medication is delivered directly to the celiac plexus.
Completion
A second needle may be used for precision or to perform a more extended neurolytic block. The entire procedure typically takes 30–45 minutes and is done on an outpatient basis.
Pain relief can last anywhere from several days to several weeks or longer, depending on the condition and the type of medication used.
The procedure is generally safe, but as with any injection near the spine, there is a small risk of:
