If you suffer from chronic neck or lower back pain caused by arthritis or degenerative changes in the spine, a Facet Joint Injection may be an effective way to both relieve your discomfort and help identify the exact source of your pain.
At Lifespring Pain Management Center, we offer this image-guided, outpatient treatment as part of our personalized approach to managing facet joint syndrome, spinal arthritis, and other causes of joint inflammation in the spine.
Facet joints are small joints located between the vertebrae in the spine. These joints allow you to bend, twist, and maintain spinal stability. When they become inflamed—due to arthritis, injury, or wear-and-tear—they can lead to localized pain, stiffness, and reduced mobility.
A Facet Joint Injection involves placing a combination of anesthetic and steroid medication directly into the affected joint(s) to reduce inflammation and block pain signals.
Preparation
You’ll lie comfortably on a treatment table. The injection site is cleaned and numbed with a local anesthetic. If needed, IV sedation may be offered for relaxation.
Guided Injection
Using fluoroscopic (X-ray) guidance, your provider carefully inserts a needle into the targeted facet joint(s).
Medication Delivery
A small dose of anesthetic and corticosteroid is injected into the joint to relieve inflammation and reduce pain.
Completion
Once the injection is complete, the needle is removed and a small bandage is applied. You’ll be monitored briefly in a recovery room before discharge.
Contact your provider immediately if you experience increased pain, fever, swelling, or other signs of infection or complications.
