CHRONIC PAIN & JOINT RELIEF TREATMENTS

Minimally Invasive Relief for Spine Arthritis & Joint Pain in Kaysville, UT

If you suffer from chronic neck or lower back pain caused by arthritis or degenerative changes in the spine, a Facet Joint Injection may be an effective way to both relieve your discomfort and help identify the exact source of your pain.

At Lifespring Pain Management Center, we offer this image-guided, outpatient treatment as part of our personalized approach to managing facet joint syndrome, spinal arthritis, and other causes of joint inflammation in the spine.

WHAT YOU WANT TO KNOW

What Is a Facet Joint Injection?

Facet joints are small joints located between the vertebrae in the spine. These joints allow you to bend, twist, and maintain spinal stability. When they become inflamed—due to arthritis, injury, or wear-and-tear—they can lead to localized pain, stiffness, and reduced mobility.

A Facet Joint Injection involves placing a combination of anesthetic and steroid medication directly into the affected joint(s) to reduce inflammation and block pain signals.

What to Expect During the Procedure

Preparation

You’ll lie comfortably on a treatment table. The injection site is cleaned and numbed with a local anesthetic. If needed, IV sedation may be offered for relaxation.

Guided Injection

Using fluoroscopic (X-ray) guidance, your provider carefully inserts a needle into the targeted facet joint(s).

Medication Delivery

A small dose of anesthetic and corticosteroid is injected into the joint to relieve inflammation and reduce pain.

Completion

Once the injection is complete, the needle is removed and a small bandage is applied. You’ll be monitored briefly in a recovery room before discharge.

After the Procedure
  • If IV sedation was used, you’ll need a companion to drive you home and assist for the rest of the day.
  • You may feel immediate relief from the anesthetic, although it may wear off within a few hours.
  • Long-term pain relief typically begins within 1–3 days as the steroid takes effect.
  • Some soreness at the injection site is normal and resolves quickly.
  • Avoid heavy lifting or vigorous activities for 24–48 hours after the procedure.

Contact your provider immediately if you experience increased pain, fever, swelling, or other signs of infection or complications.

Benefits of Facet Joint Injections
  • Reduces pain from arthritic or degenerative facet joints
  • Helps confirm the source of spine-related pain
  • Minimally invasive with quick recovery
  • Can delay or eliminate the need for surgery
  • Improves spinal mobility and quality of life
Potential Risks

Facet joint injections are generally safe, but as with all procedures, there is a small risk of:

  • Temporary pain flare-ups
  • Nerve damage or bleeding
  • Infection at the injection site
  • Steroid-related side effects (e.g. fluid retention or weight gain)

Your Lifespring provider will walk you through these risks and answer any concerns prior to treatment.
