If you've recently had a lumbar puncture or epidural injection and are now experiencing severe, lingering headaches, an Epidural Blood Patch may offer fast, lasting relief. This minimally invasive procedure is designed to treat spinal headaches caused by spinal fluid leaks—restoring balance and relieving discomfort quickly and safely.
At Lifespring Pain Management Center, we use this highly effective technique to help patients recover from post-puncture symptoms and return to daily life with confidence.
An epidural blood patch involves injecting a small amount of your own blood (autologous blood) into the epidural space around your spinal cord. This seals any tiny holes or leaks in the dura mater (the membrane around your spinal cord), preventing further fluid loss and relieving pressure that causes headaches.
Preparation
You’ll lie on your stomach while the injection area is cleaned and numbed with a local anesthetic. For anxious patients, mild IV sedation may be provided.
Blood Collection
Your physician draws 20–25cc of your own blood, usually from your arm.
Injection
A thin needle is carefully guided into the epidural space near the suspected leak. The blood is then slowly injected to seal the puncture.
Completion
Once the injection is complete, the needle is removed and you’ll be moved to a recovery area.
Most patients are asked to rest for about 30 minutes after the procedure. You’ll be monitored before being asked to stand and walk, at which point many patients already notice significant headache relief.
Post-procedure instructions typically include:
Normal activities may resume within a few days, with clearance from your Lifespring provider.
Epidural blood patches are generally very safe, but as with any medical procedure, there may be rare side effects such as:
