About Sympathetic Nerve Block Treatment

A sympathetic nerve block targets the nerves of the sympathetic nervous system, which can sometimes become overactive and cause persistent pain. This treatment is especially effective for patients with:

Sciatica
Complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS)
Peripheral neuropathy
Post-herpetic neuralgia (shingles pain)

You’ll be given IV sedation to ensure comfort throughout the procedure.
Your physician will numb the area of the lower back using a local anesthetic.
Using x-ray guidance (fluoroscopy), a contrast dye is injected to identify the exact location of the sympathetic nerves.
Once confirmed, a steroid medication is administered to the targeted area to block the pain signals and reduce inflammation.

The entire procedure is performed on an outpatient basis and usually takes less than 30 minutes.

After your injection:

You’ll be monitored briefly before going home.
Plan to rest for at least 24 hours to reduce the risk of post-procedure complications.
Initial pain relief may begin immediately due to the anesthetic.
Long-term relief typically begins 2–3 days post-injection, once the steroid takes full effect.

Results vary by individual. Some patients may experience lasting relief from just one or two injections, while others may require a series of treatments spaced over several months for full benefit.
