About The Treatment

When medication or other non-invasive treatments do not manage a patient’s pain, nerve blocks may be recommended. The advantageous thing about nerve blocks is that they serve more than one purpose. Lifespring Pain Management Center physicians may order a nerve block to:

• Determine the source of a patient’s pain

• Treat/manage painful symptoms

• Predict if pain will respond to treatment

• Relieve short-term pain after surgery, for example

 

For the procedure, a physician injects a medication that numbs the nerve(s). The medication acts as a roadblock and stops the nerve from signaling pain to the brain. For chronic pain relief, nerve blocks can last up to 12 months. However, some patients may need multiple injections over time to adequately relieve pain.
