When chronic back, groin, or hip pain becomes debilitating—and conventional treatments have failed—Discography can help uncover the root cause. At Lifespring Pain Management Center, we use this advanced diagnostic tool to evaluate spinal disc conditions and guide the next step in your care.
This minimally invasive procedure is a key part of developing a personalized treatment plan, particularly for patients being considered for minimally invasive spine surgery or other interventional therapies.
Discography (also known as a discogram) is a fluoroscopy-guided test that identifies whether one or more intervertebral discs are the source of your pain. By injecting contrast dye into targeted discs and applying gentle pressure, your physician can assess disc function and reproduce symptoms—providing valuable insight into the origin of your discomfort.
Preparation & Positioning
You’ll lie on an operating table, and your back will be cleaned and sterilized. Local anesthetic is used to numb the skin and surrounding tissue.
Guided Needle Placement
Using a fluoroscope (real-time X-ray), your provider carefully places small needles into the center of the targeted spinal discs.
Disc Pressurization & Feedback
A contrast dye is injected into the disc to increase pressure and reproduce pain symptoms. You’ll be asked to describe your pain, which helps determine if that disc is the source of your discomfort. Fluoroscopic images are taken during this step.
Completion
After all targeted discs are tested, the needles are removed, and the procedure is complete—typically in under one hour.
Discography is performed on an outpatient basis, meaning you’ll go home the same day. Some mild soreness or stiffness at the injection site is normal.
Post-procedure care may include:
Report any signs of infection such as fever, increased redness, swelling, or drainage at the injection site to our office immediately.
Discography isn’t a treatment—it’s a powerful diagnostic step that helps us determine what treatments will work best for you.
