About the Treatment

RFA works by using radio wave energy to heat and create a lesion on targeted nerves, preventing them from sending pain signals to the brain. This procedure is most commonly used to relieve:

Chronic low back pain
Neck pain
Arthritic joint pain (such as in the knees or spine)
Facet joint pain
Sacroiliac joint pain

You’ll lie comfortably as a small IV is placed in your arm.
A local anesthetic numbs the treatment area. Mild sedation is available for relaxation.
Under fluoroscopic (X-ray) guidance, a thin needle is inserted near the target nerve.
A microelectrode is used to test nerve location—some tingling or muscle twitching may occur.
Once confirmed, radiofrequency energy heats the nerve to disrupt its ability to transmit pain.

The entire procedure typically takes 15 to 30 minutes, and patients often walk out the same day.

After your RFA procedure:

You may feel mild soreness or swelling near the injection site—this usually subsides within a few days.
Apply ice or heat as directed for comfort.
If sedation was used, arrange for someone to drive you home.
Most people resume regular activities within 24 to 48 hours.

Pain relief typically begins within 7–10 days and can last anywhere from 6 months to over a year, depending on the condition and patient response. Many patients experience a significant reduction in pain and may be able to reduce or eliminate their need for pain medication.
